Energy, climate and environment, nano- and microsystems, astroparticle physics, optics and photonics, mobility, information and communication technologies:

Research in the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion is groundbreaking and internationally visible. This innovative strength has a long tradition. It was in Karlsruhe that Drais invented the bicycle, and Hertz discovered electromagnetic waves here. And Germany’s first ever e-mail was received on a Karlsruhe computer.

On the way to becoming world leaders: The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is one of the world’s biggest research institutes with outstanding international potential in science and engineering. Added to this are three Fraunhofer Institutes, the Centre for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) - the only one of its kind anywhere in the world - and many more similar organisations.
An example of the top-class research institutes in our region: FZI Living Lab AAL. FZI Living Lab AAL was established as part of the strategic research into Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). Here FZI researchers work in interdisciplinary teams with partners from industry, healthcare and care to develop technologies and service concepts that ensure independent living in old age.
